Episode 103: Kill Me Now

Episode Summary:

Our episode opens with a Friday night dinner, a very common component of any Gilmore episode. The family is seen discussing the current maid and debating over her name. It’s no secret that Emily goes through maids like maids go through dust rags. I could not imagine having a maid permanently in my house; sure it would be nice, but very odd.

So Rory has to join a team sport, so Emily has to intervene and encourages her to join the golf team. Though of course she has to first send her off to the club with her grandfather first. Lorelai immediately objects, not wanting to subject her daughter to the club lifestyle that she desperately ran away from. When she lists off the things she rather do then go to the club… that’s often how I feel about doing some of my schoolwork. Nonetheless….

So the Inn is hosting a wedding… a double wedding…. A double wedding for twins marrying twins. WEIRD!!! First note: That’s a lot of tulle and lots of purple! Lorelai of course has everything under control though and is the party planning master. Will the wedding end in bliss or tragedy, we shall find out!

Richard takes Rory to the club, much to his dismay. In our episodes so far, Richard has been a cold businessman. Watchers don’t really feel a connection for him so far. The outing seems to go array at first, but the two bond over their love of traveling. Rory specifically mentions her want to go to Fez.

Likewise, the two can gossip quite while too! It is a special relationship that never wavers throughout the series. It is something that is very settle, but something viewers realize on reflection really makes the show. At the end of the golfing, they run into a women. Upon this, Richard calls her “The most odious women alive.” It’s funny how many people feel the same way too.

Sookie and Jackson have a debacle over produce, very typical of the two. This time Jackson didn’t have the strawberries that Sookie needed for her strawberry shortcake. Instead he delivers blueberries… so instead Sookie makes blueberry shortcake, which sounds absolutely delicious to me. I don’t know what recipe she used, but I can guess it was something like this! Sookie and Jackson’s strawberry chase is the perfect precursor of what’s to come.

Rory and Lorelai meet back up at the diner for a burger. Lorelai de-stresses about the wedding chaos and asks about Rory’s day. To Lorelai’s shock and displeasure, Rory tells her she had fun. Though Lorelai doesn’t say it, you know she is thinking that her mother was right and she hates her for that. Lorelai takes on a bad attitude because of it. Why she had to attack Rory for stretching out her sweater with her boobs? At least she realizes, how wrong she was in her discussion with Sookie.

The wedding is an absolute beautiful event, from the two dancing brides, to Drella sneaking a beer, to Ms. Patty dancing with the random man. It also proves to be the perfect time for mother and daughter to reunite. It’s also good to know that ruffled underwear are a great crowd pleaser.

Favorite Quotes:

Emily: “You can use your mother’s old golf clubs. They are upstairs gathering dust, just like your mother’s potential.”

Michael: “I hate swans.”

Lorelai: “These particular swans?”

M: “No, all swans. I was attacked by a band of swans in Luxembourg Gardens when I was a boy. No one forgets that.”

L: “Oh no, not being attacked by a band of swans. Was it an all boy band of swans, kind of a scary, feathery, N-Sync sort of fiasco?”

 luxonburg gardens

Lorelai: “I have to be more adult about this. I mean if the country club life is what she wants, more power to her. Little white gloves and coming out parties, that makes some girls happy, right?

Sookie: “Sure, yeah, if they’re on Prozac absolutely.”

*** I forgot how fast the dialogue on this show really went until I tried typing out the exact conversation they were having.

Lorelai references the doublemint commercials when the set of twins unite with their lovers….

Shana Twain’s “I Feel Like a Women” on a harp? Couldn’t find that, but could find one of my old favorites.

And the Madonna/Sean Penn Marriage, that occurred between 1985 and 1989

Kirk of all Trades:

Swan delivery man! Kirk is much sassier in these episodes than he is later on. Total Job Count = 2

Hope you all spent your weekend Gilmore Girl’s binge watching with a large cup of coffee in hand!!!!

Until next episode… Oy with the poodles!!!! -L

Episode 102: The Lorelai’s First Day at Chilton

In my first post I said I wasn’t going to go in episode order, but since then I have changed my mind… well for the first few posts again. I decided that it has been almost two years since I have been able to watch the series in episode order, so why not do that now??? And in case we do have any newcomers, this way you can easily follow along and become just as big GG fan as I am!!!

And here starts my random bantering for “The Lorelai’s First Day at Chilton”:

  • The episode starts off with the most perfect of perfect mother daughter moments… it really does explain the Lorelai/Rory relationship for the remainder of the series!
  •  Here is the song that Lane runs in frantically talking about

So Rory’s first day at Chilton, let’s start counting all the ways this day goes to hell:

  • Lorelai doesn’t have her clothes from the dry cleaners
  • Lorelai wakes up late
  • Lorelai- “That’s the last time I buy anything just because it’s furry”
  • I went to public school so I never got to wear a school uniform. Oddly enough I think it would have been nice to not think about what I had to wear all the time.
  • Lorelai has to go into Chilton in her Dukes of Harzard shorts (a lot of this seems to be happening ton Lorelai!)

daisy duke

For those of you new watchers, Chilton is the ultimate stuck-up Prep school for those of the New England WASP community. It’s cold, frigid, and unforgiving. I would be scared beyond belief going into a setting such as this from a public high school! Rory most definitely has the poise and the wits to handle such a situation though.

  • Lorelai- “See that is what happens when you go to bed with your make-up on”
  • Poor Lorelai, not only does she make a fool of herself in front of the headmaster, but HER MOTHER as well!
  • Rory- “Just living in Stars Hallow is a social activity” If that isn’t the truth, I don’t know what is
  • Ultimate Rory moment: “I want to go to Harvard and study journalism and political science… I wish to be Christiane Amanpour” (some major foreshadowing possible!!!)christiane amanpour
  • Headmaster Charleston all but says Rory will fail at succeed at Chilton
  • INTRODUCE PARIS!!!! You wouldn’t think Paris’s character was one that would last for a long time, or someone that you would ever like; we will just have to wait and see what happens with her character.
  • You have to be able to recite the school’s song at any time????? Who made-up that rule?
  • There’s NO COFFEE (jk!). Though that would be the worst thing to happen.
  • Miss Patty- “Ladies, what do I see? Naked Girls! Keep those leotards on! This is not Brazil!”
  • Look’s like we got ourselves a Mary! Huh???
  • Being a college student, I don’t know if I could handle that much work at one time. When headmaster Charleston said that had high expectation, he really meant it!
  • I wonder if peaches really do roll differently if they have extra water in them???
  • Mary Count= 3
  • Lorelai and a Chilton dad… possible future? I think not!
  • Rory manages to wreck Paris’s whole project, YIKES!!
  • Mary Count Total= 4
  • TIME WARP: Miss Patty- “Now walk smooth. That’s the new Harry Potter on your heads. If they should drop, Harry will die and there won’t be any more books” Man does this quote date the show, as this is referring to the original Harry Potterharry potter

Now enters one of the most pivotal characters to the GG plot line, KIRK (in this case Mick. Why Mick then Kirk? No one will ever know)! Kirk is by far my favorite character on this show. Kirk is played by Sean Gunn. Kirk is known for all the different jobs that he holds, which is a lot. Being so, I am going to start counting all the jobs he has starting with….

  • Kirk Job’s: DSL installer (1)
  • Lorelai has a run-in with her mother
  • Note: Lane refers to her MOTHER, not parents!

And to round off our episode we have Lorelai talking about dating Luke!!! Then of course Rory has to go and ruin it by saying if they broke up they couldn’t eat there! Will Luke and Lorelai ever get together???? For those veterans you know what is or isn’t down the road for the duo. For those newbies, keep on watching!!!!!! I promise it was be rewarding!

For those of you looking for an extra treat: Buzzfeed has been adding a lot of post related to GG with the prevailing Netflix premier on OCT. 1ST!!! This one was shared by a friend and is by far my favorite!

Until next time and Oy With the Poodles!!!! -L

While this blog is not going to be done in episode order, it might be a crime not to start off with the pilot episode. For all of you newcomers out there, it is certainly the best place to start!!! And what veteran GG watcher can’t enjoy making comparisons in how different the pilot is from the rest of the series. While not my absolute favorite, it is definitely up there!

First off, everyone should have known what a great show this going to be from the opening song. I mean, “There She Goes” by The La’s is essentially a classic in my book. I will discuss Gilmore music later (even years later the soundtrack is still one of my favorite CD’s and yes I said CD).

The first scene opens at Luke’s diner with Lorelai classically begging for coffee. Speaking of COFFEE… Coffee is the inner workings of the show, the girls thrive on it. Lorelai will later make jokes about how she should just have an IV started! Insider facts will tell you though that Alexis Bledel, who plays Rory, disliked coffee and would spend the remainder of the series drinking another dark brown substance… soda.

The pilot introduces us to so many things its hard to comment on them all, so I’m just going to make a quick list of points to focus on! Feel free to comment on them yourself!

  • How old did the guy at the dinner think Rory was if Lorelai was her mother, WEIRD MUCH?
  • Wow, Luke’s dinner is SOOOO different inside and out
  • I will always love Michael’s sassiness (aka: puts phone down to check, neglects to check, and responds same way as before)
  • Why couldn’t Drella remain on constant on the series?
  • RORY AND DEAN’S FIRST LOOK!!! I still say it was love at first sight (swoon).
  • NOTE: Lane refers to her parents
  • I’m so happy that they did not keep Suki as being so accident prone
  • “Rory’s going to Chilton, Rory’s going to Chilton, Rory’s going to Chilton..” It is surprisingly a catchy tune and pops into your mind at the most random times
  • TIME WARP: when was the last time Brittany Spear’s made a music video with a plaid shirt.
  • Who are these mysteries people Lorelai could possibly be avoiding….
  • Emily make’s a comment that the house hasn’t changed much. Give it a few episode and it suddenly looks quite different.

  • I had a Korean friend throughout high school very similar to Lane. It drove her nuts when I tried to make comparisons (and was right!) to the point that I did it completely on purpose
  • Rory: “So do you like cake?” Why couldn’t I think of that as my first pick up line?
  • Dean watching Rory is the cutest, sweetest thing ever!!!
  • Luke: “Red meat can kill you. Enjoy.”
  • My mother and I have a fantastic relationship, but I don’t think anyone will ever have the relationship of Lorelai and Rory.
  • It amazes me how many of these original scenes remained in the opening sequence throughout the seven seasons of the series (Richard giving Rory the paper is just one of these infamous scenes. Also note: it was always a “special appearance by Edward Herrmann)

  • Poor Lorelei 😦 If only she knew what was to come

The first episode comes to a close with the GG’s at Luke’s, just as it should. As excited as I was about Rory and Dean, I can’t get over that Luke and Lorelai look… now that is pure magic. And the first episode ends with yet another iconic scene of the GG’s through Luke’s Window. OH THE EXCITEMENT TO COME!!!!!

For those newbies, I’m giving you a homework assignment: click on the following links and check out some about the show and the shows actresses and actors.
